Most folks already spend at least .15 cents an hour, 24 hours a day (15 cents x 24 hours x 28 days = $100.80 every month) to insure their car and their home, which are totally replaceable. Is investing 15 cents an hour ($3.60 a day) on your gift of health more important? What exactly IS that worth to you? Many folks choose to, unknowlingly and may even feel that there's no choice BUT to substitute good nutrition for drugs because, medical insurance covers most of the cost along with a percentage of the prescription. The required nutrition supporting full health is not covered anywhere. Unfortunately, health insurance doesn’t cover lost work time and job productivity; we don’t get reimbursed for pain and suffering. To top it off, prescription drugs often have severe side effects that cause temporary and in some cases, permanent problems and conditions that are worse than the original symptoms! I'm sure that you know all of the above and have witnessed it your own self. But get this! More than 100,000 folks die each year from properly prescribed medications! Yeah! Read on!

This statistic is according to an article in The Journal of American Medical Association. The author, Bruce Pomeranz, M.D., Ph.D., reviewed 39 different studies of adverse drug reactions in hospitals and came up with alarming conclusions. According to Pomeranz’s research, he estimates that 2,216,000 hospital patients experienced serious adverse drug reactions and 106,000 died from these reactions in 1994 alone. This astounding number accounted for 4.6% of all recorded deaths in the US that year. This makes drug reaction deaths the fourth leading cause of deaths in the US. According to the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health, “90% of health problems can be dealt with at home, bypassing the cost of a visit to the doctor.” Of course most everyone knows this. The real challenge is, what can we do about it? We want something that's easy, doable, cost-effective and helps our family regardless of condition or age. Well, here's something to chew on: a healthy diet that includes glyconutritional and phytochemical supplements can go a long way to ensure that you never get sick to start with! Not only do we get to avoid pain and suffering, we avoid the risks of having adverse reactions to drugs! Well, doesn't that just sound too good to be true!

Let’s take a small peek at what health already costs us everyday folks. First, we pay for health insurance in one form or another. In the US, folks typically pay a reduced rate through an employer. A doctor visit costs the office visit fee plus, a percentage or “co-pay” for the prescribed drug(s). A single doctor visit ends up costing more than $100 after paying for the office visit and the prescriptions. Let’s suppose you have a $10.00 an hour job, get sick and miss 3 days of work. Let’s see, at 8 hours per day, means another $240 is lost. So the total cost of getting sick for a few days easily costs more than $300, not to mention the loss in productivity for the employee AND the employer! Imagine the long term costs of a drawn out sickness – that thought is unbearable!

Exactly when IS it possible to start believing that simply improving our diet and therefore our health can increase our life span by just one year? What's THAT worth? At least one year’s income that's what! What if it's possible to live 10-20 years longer? What's THAT worth? Well, as you can see, it’s easy to quantify the costs of nutrition, it’s more difficult to quantify the BENEFITS of being healthy and staying that way. None of us know how long we are going to live or even what dis-ease challenges we can prevent by simply taking the steps that we know will benefit our overall health and of course our happiness. A healthy person is a happy person, after all.

Many folks choose to spend $3-5 a day on ‘drinks’ and ‘snacks’. What we CAN choose is to reduce then eliminate harmful ‘non-foods’ that ESPECIALLY challenge our health such as sodas, chips, candy, pastries, sugar, cigarettes, pre-packaged snacks, fried foods, packaged breakfast cereals, etc, etc, etc. Anything that's processed to sit on the grocery shelf without rotting simply takes away health. Go ahead, pick up anything you see on any shelf and read the ingredients! It's a good habit to get into anyway. Recognize everything?

Our health account is like our bank account, getting slowly and surely drained. We can learn and take the consistent steps to make good deposits. Why spend money on ‘non-foods’ when we can choose to invest our hard earned money to keep and maintain our precious gift of staying above ground, pumping air, healthy, happy and productive? A small investment, whenever taken, could end up saving you hundreds if not thousands of dollars of expense, anywhere on your very own, Road of Life!
