Study: Words have powerful effects on us. Its how you picture something in your mind to how you are going to perceive it. When I think of ‘study’ I think of having to do something. I also think of missing out on other stuff. I think of having to try hard. I think boredom. I think stress.
All these things are negative ways of looking at it. I mean, we don’t associate ‘play’ with all those, do we? So how about we look at it differently?
What is the outcome of learning?
Knowing how to do really cool things
Having fun doing all those cool things
Feeling confident as that new found knowledge becomes experience
Experience raises you up a notch.
How can we get all these things much easier?
By thinking back to when we were young. We learnt by playing. Most of the stuff we learnt we don’t remember how we did it because we had fun doing it. It wasn't’t boring. So time flew, we just did it, and we learnt without realizing it.
So how can you turn study into play? Easy.
Get your play area ready
Start with your first certification. Build a home lab. As you study for a new certification, add whatever hardware or software you need for that certification.
Most people start with the A+ certification. So build your first computer. Have fun buying the parts, putting it together, breaking it, fixing it and you will find that time flies and you are learning without stressing.
Make believe and get into character
Using our imagination we can transport ourselves into worlds the physical world cannot even touch. Use your imagination and conjure up an audience. Teach them what you are learning. Teaching someone something makes you learn it twice. When you are first learning something, you won't be able to teach it properly but that doesn't matter. This isn't the focus on this exercise. Most of the time you will be talking gibberish. But what the outcome will be, is that you will find more depths in material by talking about it and thinking about it differently - than you will even get just reading your book over and over and trying to understand it.
Find your own way to fun
As you think out of the box when it comes to study, you will find things unique to you that will help you. For instance, over the years I have transformed a plain old room in my house to a lab science fiction fans will be envious about LOL. I’ve got a desk with 5 monitors and a chair which looks more like a throne. I’m a trekkie freak and have the star ship enterprise occupying one corner of the room and a carbon copy of commander data on the other corner. My ceiling is painted black and I've got fluorescent stars and spot lights. Now tell me, do you not get inspired to learn more in a room like that??? LOL
